Google Doodles are the fun, surprising, and sometimes spontaneous changes that are made to the Google logo to celebrate holidays, anniversaries, and the lives of famous artists, pioneers, and scientists. When Google planned to commemorate International Women’s Day 2020 with a memorable Google Doodle, they turned to us. We partnered with the talented artists of Makerie Studio to transform their paper art illustrations into a dynamic 3D animated mandala.

Creating an Artistic Tribute

The Doodle’s key visual was designed to be a symbol of women’s empowerment throughout history, featuring 35 female characters representing different eras of women standing up for their rights. These characters were artfully integrated into three separate layers, each layer echoing a different time period in the struggle for gender equality.

The Intricacy of Paper, Reimagined in 3D

Our team meticulously recreated Makerie Studio’s intricate paper art in the digital space, ensuring the texture, the folds, and the nuances of the original design were accurately replicated. The result was a Doodle that was deeply connected to the tangible, tactile world of paper art but had the dynamic movement and immersion of 3D animation.

The Process: From Illustration to Animation

The creative process began with Makerie Studio’s stunning illustrations, which served as the primary visual inspiration. The journey from illustration to final rendering was a meticulous process that required an eye for detail, an understanding of form and movement, and a dedication to maintaining the integrity of the original paper art designs.

Witnessing the Evolution of Women's Rights

The end result was a visually striking, deeply symbolic representation of the evolution of women’s rights over time. It was a tribute to the power and resilience of women throughout history, celebrated in a globally recognized platform.

The final product was viewed by millions of people around the world, serving as a reminder of the strides women have made in their fight for equality, while also honoring the spirit of International Women’s Day (read more about this on the Google Doodles Archive).

A Doodle That Connects, Celebrates, and Commemorates

This project was a great opportunity for us to blend traditional art forms with cutting-edge digital design techniques. By bringing together paper art and 3D animation, we were able to create a Doodle that was not only visually appealing, but also rich in meaning and context, honouring the spirit of International Women’s Day.
